Remarks
The original flight plan was F70 - EMT - VNY - IZA, but the sky
was covered with strong smoke beyond AJO due to wild fire in
Southern California. The top of smoke was supposed to be 8,000
feet according to the weather briefer, but I could not manage
to fly over the smoke. I decided to diver to north to avoid
smoke at around Corona Airport (AJO). Smoke spread so quickly
that the only clear direction became 340 to 020 at around
Ontario International Airport (ONT). I kept 360 and tried to
climb since there was mountains in front whose highest MSL was
8,859 feet. While I was climbing, the airplane suddenly started
sinking at 2,000 feet/min. I guess this is because both high density
altitude due to the wild fire (smoke, too) and strong Santa Ana
down draft. I set throttle full and mixture full rich, but the
engine did not run beyond 2,300 RPM. The airplane started
climbing at 1,500 feet/min when the air condition became
better, but it started sinking at 2,000 feet/min when the
condition became bad. You can see how bad it was in this graph. I encountered
this experience where altitude goes up and down sharply. I saw
flames when I crossed the mountain section. There was no smoke
and sky was perfectly clear after I flew into the desert.
I saw a DC-4 doing pattern work at General Fox Airfield (WJF).
