Approaches

Remarks

It was an exciting flight. We encountered both wing icing and carburetor icing. The engine started buffeting during the outbound flight at 9,000 feet. Bruce had great knowledge about it and told me to turn on the carburetor heat; it worked so well. The engine buffeting got even worse at first, then stopped, which exactly what textbooks explain what happens when recovering from carburetor icing. Now I am thinking the engine buffeting during the Feb. 15 flight from Fresno to Palo Alto might also be a carburetor icing.

Fred (one of my flight instructors) told me to apply car wind shield de-icer to the wings before takeoff. I will try it next time.

Pt. Mugu Approach Radar was out of service. As the result, we had interesting experiences.

Outbound:
We got an amendment clearance when we got close to OXR. I missed several items, for the first time, but got everything in the second time. That part was no problem. I made a big mistake after reading back the clearance; I did not change the VOR frequency from Ventura. As the result, the ATC asked me "Are you flying direct to Fillmore?", which was pretty bad. I must be more careful next time.

Inbound:
We had to hold at Camarillo VOR as published right after departure. Camarillo ATIS said "Expect delay." and I thought it meant departure delay, but I was wrong. What ATIS meant was to expect hold right after departure. The holding fix was Camarillo VOR and the direction is left turn. I actually could not figure out what to do after departure. I tried to fly back to the airport (VOR is located at the airport), which was fortunately not a bad idea. The right procedure was to take a parallel entry. I was lucky that Pt. Mugu App. did not see the trace of my holding (their radar is out ;-).

I asked VFR on top from San Marcus VOR to Paso Robles VOR to avoid IMC and make a short cut (skip Morro Bay VOR). It worked very well.
